About Medical Miracles

Welcome to the Medical Miracles Blog.  Please allow me to introduce myself.  My name is Jake Miller, and I am a sports medicine physician.  My training is in family medicine, and I have completed an extra year of education focused on musculoskeletal conditions and medical care of the athlete.  I have been in practice since 2015.  I have a beautiful wife and four wonderful children.  I enjoy riding horses and being outdoors, I am a huge fan of the Muppets, and I am a little too formal in my interactions with others.  And I am always eager to learn and to teach.  Hence, I feel a drive to expand beyond what I can accomplish within my clinic.  You are now reading the result.

I thought a long time about what to write on these pages.  There are so many things to teach and share.  Do I write to patients, doctors, anyone in particular?  Ultimately, I have decided to write those things that are near to my heart, things that have to be said.  Some are intended for my precious colleagues, doctors trying to care for others while maintaining their own health and well-being.  We work in a most unique profession, one that requires exceptional altruism and compassion.  As healthcare in the United States develops, we face personal paradoxes of self-sacrifice and self-promotion, contentment and greed, collaboration and independence.  Pages in this blog will explore what can be done to improve and appreciate our profession, with the intent to empower and educate doctors.  I believe we are members of an important calling, one that needs to be preserved, protected, and advanced.

Others will be stories I can’t keep in any longer.  Some are funny, some tragic, some snapshots of medical training and caring for others.  Doctors are allowed to go places in people’s lives no one else can, to be present at special, intimate moments that change the flow of existence.  I have stood in doorways, knowing what was happening on the other side, thinking to myself, “No person should have to see this.”  Well, guess what?   The people in the room were seeing it at that very moment.  I want to put these experiences to paper (screen, tablet, whatever) to show others they are not alone, that they have friends in joy, grief, and all emotions in between.  Chances are, you’ve had a few of these moments yourself, and you may be able to empathize.

I’m glad you’re here.  I’m thankful you’re reading this.  If nothing else comes of this, know I appreciate your interest.  What I will share is important to me, and I hope it is helpful to you.

Enjoy!
